Inclusive Value Chain Assessments for Youth Workforce and Self-Employment Program Design

The tourism and hospitality sector in Africa represents a significant opportunity for youth employment, yet there are few training programs focusing on building the skills of youth who are living in poverty and are out of school to take advantage of this opportunity. More information is needed about specific entry points for young women and men across the tourism and hospitality sector and how existing skills gaps can be addressed.
Making Cents International helped YouthBuild International create a workforce training program to prepare young people (ages 17 – 25) in Africa for jobs and self-employment in the tourism and hospitality sector. The project targeted youth who are living in poverty, are not in formal education or training, and who are not employed in the formal sector.
Making Cents conducted a value chain analysis of inclusion opportunities (entry points) for youth across the tourism and hospitality sector in Kenya, South Africa, and Tanzania using a gender-inclusive lens. We also conducted a landscape review of available training resources for youth associated with the tourism and hospitality sector, with a focus on potential skills gaps. Recommendations from our inclusion analysis and landscape review were factored into the design of YouthBuild’s workforce development training program for Hilton Global.
