Challenge

The rapid rate of change in the skills required for technology-enabled jobs exceeds the ability of current educational and training systems to support well-functioning labor markets and creates high unemployment rates among young people coming out of the educational system. Workforce development programs still have limited knowledge on how to identify and respond to patterns of demand for technology skills

Solution

Making Cents collaborated with Microsoft to develop a framework and toolkit to support development of a common language and greater understanding of the unique role each stakeholder can play in the youth workforce development field. The framework and toolkit can be used to map youth workforce development programs, so that users can identify these programs’ core principles and success factors and learn lessons from a vast base of effective and efficient examples.

Our Understanding the Youth Workforce Development Technology Skills Training Landscape report identifies gaps in ICT skill training and opportunities for workforce development practitioners, policymakers, education and training professionals, and other stakeholders. It assists programs to identify and respond to patterns of demand for technology skills and develop strategies for working effectively with a diverse range of young people.

The toolkit also informs and augments Microsoft’s YouthSpark program, a global initiative that aims to create opportunities for 300 million youth. It will not only help Microsoft to determine adjustments to approaches and funding, but also to bring in relevant partners, support new content creation, and implement other global activities that strengthen the likelihood of youth employment and/or successful business creation.
