Many rural youth in South Sudan affected by recent conflicts have been unable to sustain their agro-pastoralist livelihoods. These youth have limited opportunities to engage in larger agricultural value chains, and viable entry points for them are not adequately identified or understood.
Making Cents International has been supporting the engagement of youth in target value chains in two ways. In 2015, we conducted an assessment to identify the most viable value-chain entry points for rural youth in the Greenbelt Region of the Equatoria States. We focused on the value chains with the greatest potential to strengthen resiliency against future shocks. Our findings provided a better understanding of agricultural value chains that offer the best livelihood opportunities for rural youth and the kind of trainings that would prepare them for this engagement. Our assessment provided actionable recommendations for USAID/South Sudan, implementers, and local partners.
In 2016, we continue to design strategies for increasing the ability of youth to effectively engage in agricultural activities. We responded to the project’s objectives of reaching policy makers at the state level by providing training and orientation to local stakeholders on youth’s engagement in agriculture.
We designed a training workshop in the target cities of Torit and Yei to reinforce FARM II priorities of land management, climate-smart agriculture, standards and quality, roles of local public and private stakeholders, and provided recommendations for local stakeholder's future engagement.
